Saint John  (s?nt)1. An island of the US Virgin Islands in the West Indies east of Puerto Rico. It became a Danish colony in the 1700s and passed to various European powers before Denmark sold it to the United States in 1917.2. A city of southern New Brunswick, Canada, on the Bay of Fundy. Founded as a French trading post in the 1630s, it was captured by the British in 1758 and was a refuge for Loyalists after the American Revolution.
